Fish, no land meat

Pescatarian Food in Peru

Written by the Peruvify team in Lima, from the catalog of 205 dishes, drinks, desserts and fruits. Last updated .

Pescatarian food in Peru is the coast at lunch, plus trout in the Andes and paiche in the Amazon. People also search the spelling pescetarian. Both mean the same limit here: fish and shellfish are in, and beef, pork, chicken, goat, duck and guinea pig are out. Every meatless plate on the vegetarian list is open to you too.

Eat the coast at lunch

Ceviche, tiradito, jalea, rice with seafood, and a fried fish under a seafood sauce are the ordinary good lunch. Leche de tigre is the spicy lime marinade served as a small glass. It contains fish. It is not a vegetarian shot.

Order fish at midday. The rooms that do this every day are busy then. A mixed ceviche adds shrimp, squid or octopus to the fish. Black clam ceviche is a northern plate, darker than the Lima one. Both are in the list below.

Causa is the trap. The catalog version includes chicken, and some kitchens swap in tuna. Tuna is fine on this diet. Chicken is not. Ask which one is in the potato.

Seafood dishes in the catalog

Only the items whose ingredients include fish or shellfish and no land meat. Vegetarian plates are not repeated here. They are on the vegetarian guide, and they all fit this diet.

Names that are not a pescatarian order

Once you leave the ocean

In Cusco and the Sacred Valley, trucha frita is pan-fried trout. It is the straightforward fish order in the mountains. The soups and the cheese corn from the Cusco guide cover the meals when you want to skip meat without another trout.

In Arequipa, chupe de camarones is the shrimp chowder. Ocopa is potatoes and herbs, and some cooks add shrimp. If you want the shrimp, say so. If you want it meatless, say that too.

In Iquitos, patarashca, grilled paiche, timbuche and ceviche de cocona are the fish lane. Paiche on a menu is often farmed. Juane is chicken. Suri is a grub. Neither belongs on this diet.

Questions

Can pescatarians eat ceviche?

Yes. Classic ceviche is raw fish cured in lime with chili and onion. Mixed ceviche adds other seafood. Ceviche de pato is duck, so read the second word.

Is lomo saltado pescatarian?

No. It is wok-fried beef with tomato, onion and fries. The soy sauce does not replace the meat.

What is paiche?

A very large Amazon fish. Restaurants often serve farmed paiche rather than wild fish. It shows up grilled, shredded, or next to plantain and yuca.

Do I also get the vegetarian dishes?

Yes. Anything on the vegetarian list is inside this diet. This page only repeats the plates that add fish or shellfish, so the two guides split the menu instead of cloning it.
